American Red Cross to Accept Bitcoin Donations

One of the many measures of bitcoin’s health over the past eighteen months has been just how many non-profit organizations accept donations of the digital currency.

To date, there’s been quite a few. And this week, we’ve learned that yet another major humanitarian organization is embracing bitcoin to support their mission.

They’re the American Red Cross, and Atlanta-based BitPay is giving them a helping hand by hosting a bitcoin donation page, in addition to processing all donations without fees (BitPay’s services are free for non-profits).

“Introducing the American Red Cross to the bitcoin community is really going to showcase the generosity of this new group of consumers,” said BitPay’s nonprofit outreach coordinator Elizabeth Ploshay. “Bitcoin users are extremely passionate people who are looking to put their bitcoin towards good causes. I’m sure the community will be excited to have such an established charity to donate to.”

The American Red Cross already accepts a number of payment types, and by expanding to allow bitcoin donations, you could say they’re opening their doors to a whole new revenue stream.

“The Red Cross is thrilled to partner with BitPay to offer a different way for generous donors to support our humanitarian mission,” adds Jennifer Niyangoda, who works as the executive director of Corporate and Foundation Programs at American Red Cross. “This gives a new generation of supporters the opportunity to help people in need.”

BitPay notes that the American Red Cross will be taking part in tomorrow’s Bitcoin Black Friday event and Bitcoin Giving Tuesday by means of being listed as a place for bitcoiners to spend their bits.
