Open Road Films Partners with MovieTickets and GoCoin, allows Moviegoers Pay with Bitcoin

Now watching movies paying Bitcoin has become possible as Open Road Films has teamed with MovieTickets.com and GoCoin to allow moviegoers to pay with digital currency. The decision has given one more reason for Bitcoin enthusiasts as in an apparent first for a movie studio; Open Road Films will allow fans to use Bitcoin to purchase tickets to “Dope.”

Dope is an indie comedy about a high school geek that opens June 19. According to the announcement consumers can use the digital currency to buy tickets on MovieTickets.com at more than 900 theaters in the US. They will have option of payment platform GoCoin that is going to help them process each transaction in a way that’s similar to a credit-card purchase.

Interestingly, the deal was facilitated by the social media agency, Partiqal. However, the choice of film for the payment experiment is no accident but a deliberate decision. Nonetheless, the writer-director Rick Famuyiwa’s “Dope” debuted to great acclaim at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, follows a self-described geek named Malcolm.

The role of Malcolm has been played by newcomer Shameik Moore who likes ’90s hip-hop culture and modern-day technology in equal measure. Now that the film’s distributor, Open Road Films, will allow Bitcoin users to buy tickets on MovieTickets.com at more than 900 theatres in the U.S., customers have one more paymention option at their disposal.

The Film Also Shows and Talks about Bitcoin

The sources from the company claim that the payment platform, GoCoin, will make the process transaction similar to a credit-card purchase. Additionally, as Malcolm uses Bitcoin in the movie when he and his friends are in a jam and even tells his mother early on in the film, it will be a sort of promotion of the digital currency on screen.

He says that he just read that money as he knows it is dead and soon the world is only going to buy and sell products using Bitcoins. Even Open Road Chief Marketing Officer Jason Cassidy admits that Bitcoin is an integral part of ‘Dope’ and he could not be more excited to bring this unique new opportunity to moviegoers.

According to the sources the film, which opens Friday on roughly 2,000 screens nationwide, is laced with references to iPhones, YouTube and apps like Waze. At the same time it is the digital currency Bitcoin that arguably has a starring role in the comedy.
