Emsisoft, a Cybersecurity firm, has recently unveiled a solution that tackles Bitcoin (BTC)-demanding ransomware WannaCryFake.

The company, specifically, announced in a Sept. 25 blog post that the new solution they will be releasing for the WannaCryFake ransomware bug is a free fix.

Evidently, WannaCryFake is an improved version of its predecessor WannaCry worm. The latter malicious software program caused jitters after it spread across various computer networks for 2 years beginning from May 2017.

In the event that WannaCryFake worm infects a particular computer system, the victim’s personal data will be illegally held hostage. For an individual to get the data back, the perpetrators will need a payment in Bitcoins to decrypt the data files.

“WannaCryFake is a strain of ransomware that uses AES-256 to encrypt a victim’s files. Files that have been encrypted by WannaCryFake are appended with the file extension: ‘.[][recoverydata54@protonmail.com].WannaCry’ According to the ransomware distributors, the price of decryption depends on how quickly you email them.” Emsisoft explained.

Emisoft has further strongly advised that the victims who use its solution should not try to contact the perpetrators or even pay the ransom amount. It continues that the new free decryption tool is enough to help recover the encrypted files without damaging the data.

The decrypting process is so simple. Victims will have to remove the malware from the system, download Emsisoft’s decryptor and run it.

Escalation of Ransomware attacks

In the first quarter of 2019, ransomware attacks have risen by as much as 118% according to McAfee Labs. In addition, the cybersecurity company stated that the Ryuk ransomware strain has been one of the most common ransomware campaigns in that period — as a result, even a particular newspaper printing in the United States was temporarily halted.
