Founder and CEO of Casa, Jameson Lopp, has shared his experience syncing Parity v2.6.8-beta to the 9,390,000th Ethereum block on Twitter. Lopp says that it took his $2500 benchmark machine nine days and 2 hours to fully sync Parity to the Ethereum block.

He further went on to specify that the device performed more than 47 terabytes of disk reads and 42 terabytes of disk write during the sync, and even at that speed, the entire process bottlenecked at the disk-IO level.

It took my benchmark machine 9 days 2 hours to full sync Parity 2.6.8 to Ethereum block 9,390,000. It performed over 47 TB of disk reads and 42 TB of disk writes, was disk IO-bound the entire time.

Previous cryptocurrency lead at Cinnober, Eric Wall responded to the tweet marveling at the speeds since it indicates that initial block download (IBD) disk read/write times have improved in magnitudes over the past few months due to updates to Geth. Geth is the most popular software client for running an Ethereum node and is also the standalone CLI client for the Go Ethereum protocol.

Lopp responded to the tweet saying that there is no specific way to verify the improvement in Geth since the beginning due to Ethereum’s hard forks over time but agrees that Geth has made some considerable improvements over the past year.

Parity is one of the fastest and most advanced Ethereum clients that built to handle mission-critical workloads as miners, cryptocurrency service providers, and exchanges. Such applications need quick synchronization to the Ethereum blockchain and need to be extremely reliable and fast.
