NFL offers commemorative NFT ticket stubs to fans

The National Football League (NFL) will offer fans who purchase tickets for selected games the opportunity to buy limited edition commemorative digital ticket stubs in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Anyone who purchases a ticket through the NFL ticketing network, which comprises Ticketmaster, StubHub and SeatGeek, will have the option of adding the NFT to their purchase. They will then receive an email and invited to manage their token in a dedicated marketplace powered by Ticketmaster.

The virtual commemorative tickets were first made available for the Arizona Cardinals’ trip to the San Francisco 49ers on 7th November and will next be available when the Detroit Lions host the Chicago Bears this weekend.

The league hopes to tap into demand for both NFT collectibles and to provide a digital equivalent to the physical ticket stub in an era of mobile ticketing. Digital ticket stubs are a much more natural form of NFT than other concepts because they are directly analogous to physical tickets which are in limited supply due to stadium capacities.

Blockchain, the distributed ledger technology that powers cryptocurrencies and NFTs, has also been used to power mobile tickets.

Meanwhile, the idea of owning a limited-edition stub could be an appealing prospect to fans who want to have a memento of attending a live event. Inevitably, as with any NFT exercise, these stubs could increase in value and become a form of investment.

The NFL marketplace will also have other forms of NFTs for fans of all 32 teams to collect and these can all be traded or sold on the platform. The NFL has also formed a partnership with Dapper Labs to create digital video highlight NFTs similar to the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) successful Top Shot venture.

“Creating more one-to-one experiences through innovation and technology is a high priority across the league and clubs,” said Bobby Gallo, head of club business development at the NFL.

“Leveraging the emerging world of NFTs is a new and exciting way for us to create additional value and to further engage with fans who attend select games by providing a virtual commemorative ticket. There is no better time than the upcoming holiday season to kick off this fun and engaging fan experience, starting with the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions Thanksgiving Day matchup.”
