5 Things in Tech You Missed This Week – 3/12/16

1 – Verizon settles with the FCC on its use of “super-cookies” Per Forbes : Verizon Wireless is forking over a chunk of change to the Federal Communications Commission for its use of “supercookies” to track customers’ online behavior. Verizon employed UIDH (unique, undeletable identifiers)—which third parties also used—in December 2012 but did not disclose this information to customers until nearly two years later. Verizon did not update its privacy policy to include information on its use of supercookies until March 2015, at which time it also offered customers an opt-out option. Why this is important for your business:

Does your website have a privacy policy? Have you updated it recently? If you’re using cookies, re-targeting or other forms of search engine optimization tools that may be receiving data from visitors without their knowledge you could be liable.

2 – New code from MIT makes web pages load 34% faster in any browser. From Gizmodo : “As pages increase in complexity, they often require multiple trips that create delays that really add up,” explains Ravi Netravali, one of the researchers. “Our approach minimizes the number of round trips so that we can substantially speed up a page’s load-time.” The new system, known as Polaris, was developed by the university’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
