Once again, poor Australians have been forced to suffer massive Internet outages Thursday thanks to Telstra.

The outage resulted in many customers without data for hours, spreading to services reliant on the Internet such as ATMs, EFTPOS machines and Uber apps. You couldn’t get a ride, or you were caught short if you wanted to pay for a beer by card.

Telstra’s CEO Andrew Penn apologised to customers on Friday , understanding how many rely on the network’s very well-promoted reliability. As part of the apology, the company announced another free data day on April 3, its second after the last outage in February .

Based on last time’s gluttonous 1,841 terabyte free-for-all from customers, it’ll be another smash-and-grab come April from users keen to stick it to the man.

If you’re short on ideas on what to download, here are some suggestions. Download those freaking updates

Image: Mashable Australia You know those screens. Those pop-ups. Those notifications. If you’ve got nothing better to do, there’s no better time to look after those gigabytes of so-called crucial software updates that you’ve clicked "ignore" for far too long. Maybe Telstra could use one. Download the discography of your favourite musician

If you’re a subscriber to one of those music streaming services, like Spotify or Apple Music, why not download a back catalogue of music?

We highly suggest the stylings of saxophonist Kenny G, whose 14 albums of smooth jazz will be an antidote to the compelling need to scream, because you lost work thanks to Telstra’s outage. Seed a Linux distro on BitTorrent What’s a Linux distro? It doesn’t matter. You can download the entirety of Ubuntu Linux legally via BitTorrent, and seed it to your hearts content, chewing through the gigabytes of data required to download and upload the operating system. Thanks Telstra. […]
