Vitalik Buterin ranks 15th in TIME’s 100 most influential people

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of the 2nd largest cryptocurrency Ethereum, has made the list of the recently announced TIME Magazine’s list of ‘100 most influential people of 2021’.

Prior to this, Buterin was named as one of Bloomberg’s list of ‘50 Most Influential People in the World’ of 2017 and Forbes Magazine’s ‘30 Under 30’ in 2018.

Buterin’s name came alongside some of the tech icons including Apple’s Tim Cook, Tesla’s and SpaceX’s Elon Musk, and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang.

Buterin’s article was written by Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of the major bulletin board site Reddit. He pointed out Ethereum’s impressive market cap of around $400 billion, contributed by the development of Dapps and NFTs this year. He wrote:

“What makes Vitalik so special, though, is that he is a builder’s builder. No one person could’ve possibly come up with all of the uses for Ethereum, but it did take one person’s idea to get it started. From there, a new world has opened up, and given rise to new ways of leveraging blockchain technology—some of which I’ve invested in.”

In an email to Coindesk, Ohanian noted:

“It’s amazing to think how much of my career has been made possible thanks to his work: investments in the ETH presale, CryptoPunks, Bored Apes, Loot, and startups like Coinbase, Axie Infinity, Sorare, Quicknode, Skyweaver, and Rainbow… I’ve never been more excited about the potential of the internet thanks to him.”

Buterin will appear in a documentary film ‘Ethereum: The Infinite Garden’, which is set to release in 2023. The film will focus on the innovations brought on by Ethereum and Buterin and has raised over 1,035.96 Ether in the film’s funding target.

In addition to Buterin, this year TIME’s popular list features several people tied to the cryptocurrency industry. Some of them include Tesla CEO and Dogecoin proponent Elon Musk, El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele, and tennis player Naomi Osaka.
