The launch of Facebook’s metaverse has ushered in a slew of new projects centered on virtual reality and similar technology. However, it wasn’t just Microsoft and Nvidia who showed off their own versions of an interactive virtual environment that weaves together a variety of things. With Metaverse Training on the rise, it’s only fair we discuss some of the most intriguing metaverse projects to keep an eye on in 2022.

The sandbox

The Sandbox is by far one of the largest and most valuable metaverse initiatives in the world right now.

It’s a game set in its own metaverse, or interactive virtual world, that allows users to purchase ‘LAND,’ or virtual property, and use it in the same way they would an actual piece of property.

The game employs its own non-fungible blockchain token, SAND, which players may use to acquire virtual space in this universe (NFTs). It is based on the Ethereum blockchain, and in its fully matured form, it will allow Sandbox metaverse players to host their own events in their own places.

Users can also utilize SAND to manufacture and sell their own NFTs in the Sandbox’s marketplace. Users can produce and sell voxel art, or 3D pixel artwork, and design their own games — as well as charge a fee to other users who visit their metaverse location in The Sandbox.

Decentraland

Decentraland, another significant metaverse project that has gotten some media attention, recently made headlines after Tokens.com paid $2.4 million, or about Rs 18 crore, for a piece of virtual land on the platform.

Decentraland is based on the Ethereum blockchain as well, and it employs its own currency, MANA, for platform transactions.

Decentraland has asserted that its ability to provide a 3D metaverse sets it distinct from other 2D metaverse efforts. It offers a virtual landscape that it promotes as a tool for users to create their own virtual stores.

Star Atlas

Star Atlas is reminiscent of Spore and Kerbal Space Program — or, at the very least, what these two classic games could have been if they had been created today. Star Atlas, in the words of its creator, Michael Wagner, is a space-themed MMORPG (massively-multiplayer online role-playing game) that promises to be constantly expanded and developed.

The latter aims to provide players with an infinite number of regions to explore in the game, tying into what No Man’s Sky promised in its non-metaverse style.

Users can buy all in-game collectibles with ATLAS, the game’s own token created on the Solana blockchain, according to the game’s creators. NFTs can be used to buy land, in-game characters, and things.

Wrapping up

The metaverse sector is rapidly expanding, and it’s logical to expect more developers and creatives to join the battlefield in the coming months and years. After all, play-to-earn hasn’t only been a hit with gamers; it’s also been a windfall for the platforms that make it possible, as each of them takes a cut of the transaction fees generated by users. Revenue that can then be re-invested in the best development skills available.
